Chapter Twenty-One

Sasha was bundled in down, wool and fleece and wearing heavy winter boots. “As God is my witness, I will never be cold again,” she whispered.

“What’s that?” Remi asked, turning back. She’d left Leo at home for this expedition to the parking lot of the old trail system.

“Nothing.” Sasha hadn’t asked where they were going. Cori was furious that she’d kept Officer Crump’s first visit a secret and it was as if Sasha had become invisible.

The trail they were on was nearly invisible, too. It was probably dangerous to be out here on a blustery grey winter day. She was surprised the parking lot was even plowed.

“She won’t come,” Cori said to no one in particular. She seemed to be mad at everyone.

Bridget and Duff exchanged glances over Cori’s head. They probably did that a lot. It was convenient that the scrappy master trainer was so tiny.

“She’ll come,” Bridget said. “She owes me.”

“But then you’ll owe her,” Cori said.

“I’m okay with that,” Bridget said. “I always owe someone something and someone always owes me. It’s the Dog Town underground currency system.”

“I can’t stand owing anything,” Cori muttered, kicking a branch out of the way. She almost slipped and two hands came out and steadied her. She shrugged them off immediately. “Especially to her. Traitor.”

“She’s not a traitor,” Bridget said. “We know her well. Or we used to before she became a—”

“Sneaky no-good traitor.”

“People don’t change that much overnight. She had her reasons for what she did. Maybe she’ll tell us what they are today.”

“If you’re not hostile,” Duff said, pulling her scarf down to speak. “If you can keep a muzzle on it.”

Cori pushed her hat back to glare at Duff. “When did you become full-fledged Mafia? Did the vote happen when I was away?”

“Am I full-fledged?” Duff said. “Just when I thought I was out… they pull me back in.”

She did her best Pacino impression and Remi and Sasha laughed.

“I’m only half joking,” Duff called back to them. “You ladies be careful not to get pulled into the criminal life.”

“That ship probably sailed when I lassoed that rescue dog,” Sasha said.

“Don’t mention that today,” Duff said. “Be very careful about what you say.”

“It can and will be used against you,” Cori said. “By the traitor. I can’t believe you told her where we meet, Bridget. You’ve broken a sacred code.”

“It had to be safe for her, too, Cori. She can’t help if she’s seen with us.” She gestured to the bronze statue ahead of them. “I’d hate to give up this spot, but we can find another.”

The eight-foot statue was a chow chow with a white crown that hadn’t melted since the last storm. Bridget patted the big dog like an old pal.

The crunch of boots on snow made them turn. A woman trudged toward them up the trail. She pulled her scarf from her face and smiled. Her eyes were warm and brown, and the hair spilling out from under her hat was also dark. She looked friendly and kind… not like a traitor at all.
